His thrice repeated charge to Peter.
CHAP XXI.
Peter's curiosity concerning John.

16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. [1] He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, [2] thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

18 [3] Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.

19 This spake he, signifying [4] by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple [5] whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry [6] till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

24 ¶ This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and [7] we know that his testimony is true.

25 [8] And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, [9] I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

TheACTS of the Apostles.

CHAP.I.

1 Christ after his resurrection, having given instructions to his apostles, and commanded them to wait in Jerusalem the coming of the Holy Ghost, ascendeth into heaven in their sight. 10 Two angels warn them to depart, and to look for his second coming: 12 they return, and give themselves unto prayer. 15 Peter exhorting to fill-up the place of the traitor Judas, Matthias is chosen by lot to be an apostle.

THE former treatise have I made, O [10] Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

2 [11] Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost [12] had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

3 [13] To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

4 [14] And, ‖‖ Or, eating together with them. being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, [15] which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5 [16] For John truly baptized with water; [17] but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, [18] Lord, wilt thou at this time [19] restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7 And he said unto them, [20] It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8 [21] But ye shall receive ‖‖ Or, the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you. power, [22] after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and [23] ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

9 [24] And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, [25] he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10 ¶ And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them [26] in white apparel;

11 Which also said, [27] Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, [28] shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

12[29] Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.

13 And when they were come in, they went up [30] into an upper room, where abode both [31] Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Al-
