PRAYER FOR DIVINE AID

G. Is þīn gemind swā mihtig þæt hit mage eall gehealden þæt þū geðencst,[1] and hym bebēotst tō healdenne?

A. Nese, lā nese; nē mīn nē nānes mannes nis tō þām creftig þæt hit mage alle[2] gehæaldan þæt[3] him man befæst.

G. Befæste hit þonne bōcstafum, and āwrīt hit. Ac mē þincð þæt þēah þæt þū sī tō ūnhal, þæt ðū ne mage hit æall āwrītan; and þēah þū æall hāl wēre, þū beþorftest[4] þæt ðū hæfdest dīgele stōwe,[5] and ǣmanne ǣlces ōðres þinges, and fǣawa cūðe men and creftige mid þē, ðe nānwiht ne āmyrdan, ac fultmoden tō þīnum crefte.

A. Ic nebbe nān þāra nē þonne amenne, nē ōðera manna fultum, nē swā dȳgela stowe þæt mē tō swilcum weorce onhagie; forðī ic nāt hwæt[6] ic dōn sceal.

G. Nāt ic þonne nānwiht betere þonne þū ðē gebidde. Wilna ðē tō Gode, Hǣlend mōdes and līchaman, þæt þū mage þurh ðā hēle begitan þæt ðæt þū wilnast; and þonne þū ðē gebeden hæbbe, āwrīt þonne þæt gebed, þī læs þū hit forgyte, þæt þū sī ðē werðer þīnes creftes;[7] and gebyde þē fēawum wordum dēorlice mid fulle angitte.

Drihten, þū ðe eart Scypend ealra gesceafta, forgyf[9] mē ǣrest þæt ic þē cunne rihtæ, and gescǣadlice biddan,


R. Tantane illa est ut excogitata omnia bene servet?

A. Difficile est, imo potest.

R. Ergo scribendum est. Sed quid agis, quod valetudo tua scribendi laborem recusat? Nec ista dictari debent; nam solidutinem meram desiderant.

A. Verum dicis. Itaque prorsus nescio quid agam.

R. Ora salutem et auxilium quo ad concupita pervenias, et hoc ipsum litteras manda, ut prole tua fias animosior. Deinde quod invenis paucis conclusiunculis breviter collige. Nec modo cures invitationem turbae legentium; paucis ista sat erunt civibus tuis.

A. Ita faciam :

Deus universitatis conditor, praesta mihi primum ut bene te rogem, deinde ut me agam dignum quem exaudias, postremo ut liberes. Deus
