of the Konkani word or phrase, instead of an example, has been given; the reader will choose that which corresponds to the meaning he requires. The different meanings of the English words hare been established chiefly according to the Dictionary of Smith; to the different English meanings, some of which are rather rare, different Konkani words or expressions have been assigned, distinguished, for clearness' sake, by numbers; where only a semicolon distinguishes them, the words or expressions are simply or nearly synonyms. To the Konkani translation of an English word, words in brackets have sometimes been added; the reader must use his judgment as to when the sense requires the addition of the bracketed words, when not.
Finally, the Author offers his hearty thanks to all who have assisted him in his work; among others to the Rev. Fr. A. Coelho, who, after a careful inspection, was pleased to declare in writing his full approbation of the work.
