The newly created Department of Homeland Security (DHS) gained the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Service) from the Department of Justice and the U.S. Customs Service and the U.S. Secret Service from the Department of the Treasury. Beginning in 2002, data from those 3 agencies are now reported under the DHS. For 2002, data are based only on those victims who discharged their service weapons. With the realignment in 2002 of several federal agencies, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (formerly the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) was moved from the Department of the Treasury to the Department of Justice.
