additions to the lending and reference departments, and for indexes to the borrowers and their guarantors, &c. For these purposes they are always serviceable; but they will not serve for the sole or general catalogue of a large library, on account of their cumbrousness and the space required for their accommodation when they run

to any considerable length. In such cases the catalogue should always be printed in book form. For use in a lending library, the card-catalogue will be best if fitted into small light trays which the readers can hold in the hand when consulting the indicator. For reference library purposes, drawers of heavier construction are better. Heavy drawers should run on slides strong enough to support their weight and prevent them sagging.
