Lifecycle of Parliamentary Documents: United Kingdom

The policy aims to preserve digital resources by “provid[ing] for the preservation of both content information objects and their associated metadata, the maintenance of a persistent bond between the two, and the creation of new metadata to document the preservation processes undertaken.” [1] The strategy is intended to maintain accessibility and readability of digital resources over time, taking particular care to ensure that the resources are not machine dependent and do not require a specific hardware or software to access them; that the technology does not become obsolete; that the integrity of the resources are maintained to ensure “its continued integrity, authenticity and history”;[2] and that any media used to store the data is not fragile and is stored in appropriate conditions.[3]

The Parliamentary Archives has also established a UK Parliament Web Archive that aims to “capture, preserve, and make accessible UK Parliament information published on the web [and] includes UK Parliament websites and social media dating from 2009 to the present.”[4] Access to

the Parliament Web Archive is open to anyone with an internet connection.[5]
