know not whether he has appeared to recant or to prove his obstinacy. As far as I can learn the whole Diet has declared that in case he maintains his evil doctrines he will be struck with the ban of the Empire. But in any case, as he has safe- conduct, he will be allowed to go away, even if he does not recant.

To-day arrived in a Saxon cart Dr. Martin Luther in the company of three men, namely, a monk, Amsdorf and a Danish noble named Swaven. Before the cart rode the imperial herald in his costume, with the Eagle Arms, and his squire. Justus Jonas of Nordhausen with his famulus followed the wagon. Many of the nobility met him ; of the Saxons, Bern- hard von Hirschfeld,^ John Schott, Albert of Lindenau with six horsemen, and many other courtiers of the elector. At ten in the morning he entered the city, accompanied by more than two thousand people, as far as his lodging, which he has with the Saxon councillors, Frederic Thunau and Philip Feilitzsch, and also with Ulrich Pappenheim* the imperial marshal, not far from the Swan Inn, where Lewis, Elector Palatine, lodges. On the journey Luther was very honorably received in Saxon lands; he preached at Erfurt, Gotha and Eisenach. The Erfurters went two [German — four English] miles to meet him and received him honorably. At Leipsic he was given no ovation, but only the usual cup of wine. It is said the papists are not a little frightened at his advent, for they hoped he would not come, which would have given them the better chance to judge him more harshly.

'Pappenheim (died 1539) waa Hereditary Marshal of the Empire. Ht lodged with Luther at the Hospice of St. John at Worma and conducted hin to and from the Diet.
