No man would write such a thing for the fun of it.

"I'm sorry," said I awkwardly. "I thought I was doing right. Indeed, I really thought so."

I told her my name.

She looked puzzled, and finally shook her head.

"It has a familiar sound, but I can not place it."

"There goes the bell," I exclaimed. "It's the police,—come for the lunatic!"
