PROCEEDINGS

OF THE

COLONIAL CONFERENCE,

1887.

THURSDAY, APRIL 14TH.

MARRIAGE WITH A DECEASED WIFE'S SISTER.

The President[1]: The only other thing that we have to consider to-day is a very different matter from that which we have been considering, namely; the question of marriage with a deceased wife’s sister. (To Mr. Downer): I think you wish to bring this question before the Conference.

Mr. Downer[2]: It was thought amongst some of the representatives of the Colonies that the occasion of their meeting together would be a very proper one for making some representations to the Government upon this subject, and with the view of asking the Government to pass some statute recognising the laws in the Colony permitting

  1. Sir Henry Holland, Secretary of State for the Colonies.
  2. Now Sir John Downer.
