It is a laborious and comprehensive collection and analysis of Statutes and Decisions, and is not equalled in the variety and extent of its learning by any similar production in our own or in any language. Like most other of Mr. Chitty's productions it is eminently practical, which has rendered it a deservedly popular work with the profession. Most elementary writers upon Bills and Notes, for the past ten years, have availed themselves of Mr. Chitty's labors, and no writer more freely than Mr. Justice Story. By some of the profession Mr. Chitty's plan of combining the law relating to Bills and Notes is thought to be a defect which the late Judge Story endeavored to obviate by treating of these subjects in distinct works. If we may judge of the value and esteem in which a book is held by the number of editions it has passed through, Chitty on Bills is not surpassed by any modern legal publica- tion, since there have been no less than nineteen editions of it in Eng- land and America, since its first publication in 1799. The author was assisted in editing the last English edition by J. W. Hulme. The first American were reprints of the first English editions, 8vo., Philadelphia, 1803-7. In 1809 and 1819, it was edited by the late Judge Story, and since that time the American editions have been reprinted from the last English with notes of American cases, by E. D. Ingraham, T. Hunting- ton, P. O. Beebee, and 0. L. Barbour.
