W The Institutes are comprised in four Books, each Book is divided into Titles or Chapters, and each Title into paragraphs. The old method of citing the Insti tutes (which is said to have originated in the time of Irenius) was to give the com mencing word in a title, paragraph, or chapter — e. g. ^ Si adversus Inst, de nupt. which signifies the paragraph beginning Si adversus of the Institutes, title de nup- tiis. Sometimes the number of the paragraph was introduced, § 12, Si adversus Inst de nupt. Another way of citing the Institutes is to give the number of the Book Title, and paragraph. To facilitate the acquisition of the former method of cita tion, Strykius invented the juridical playing cards, by means of which the laws quoad verba initiolia might be learned. The first paragraph in each title of the Institutes is not numbered, and is designated by the letters pr. For further infor- mation see Am.
