HOD templated editing these Reports, and had progressed somewhat in the undertaking, but for some cause relinquished the task, and transferred his notes to Judge Williams, who inserted them in the early part of the volume. The American editor omitted such Cases as were supposed to be inapplicable to the United States, a plan that cannot with safety be pursued in editing English Reports, except .as to Tythe Cases, since, sooner or later, experience has shown that the omissions are the very decisions desired in some parts of the Union. His contributions, in the way of notes and references, are considerable ; and to several of the Cases ihey amount to learned essays. " Chief Justice Hobart was a most learned, prudent, grave, and reli- gious judge," whose Reports are of very high authority. Judge Jenkins, a contemporary of Coke and Hobart, predicted that their labours would be co-extensive with the doctrines of the Common Law, which prophesy seems destined to be fulfilled. " The monuments of their great abilities and diligence will flourish so long as our most just and holy laws, and the splendour, majesty, and name of England shall endure. I knew, marked, observed, and revered that noble pair for many years. Lord Hobart was adorned with the brightest endowments ; his eloquence was excellent, and his understanding piercing." Pref. Jenk.
