JAC IRVING, DAVID. An Introduction to the Civil Law. 4th ed. 8vo. Edinburgh. 1837. I know of no work in our language that contains so much useful infor- mation in a small compass as Dr. Irving's. He discloses the fountains from which a knowledge of the Civil Law may be drawn, and points out the utility of its study with convincing arguments, clothed in the language of a scholar and a jurist, thoroughly acquainted with his sub- ject. The bibliographical criticism and information with which it abounds, gives it a peculiar value which few elementary books possess. 1 Jurist, 661 ; 14 L, O. 334 ; 2 Hoff. Leg. Stu. 557 ; 2 L. JACKSON, CHARLES. A Treatise on the Pleadings and Prac- tice in Real Actions ; with Precedents of Pleadings. Svo. Bos- ton. 1828. A very learned work, which proves the author to be quite familiar with a recondite branch of the law. " In addition to its value as a book of practical forms, it must rank very high as a clear and profound exposition of the ancient Law of Real Actions, and such as few men in Engrland or the United States could have produced." The pretty general abolition of these Forms of Actions in the United States, circumscribes its utility, but where applicable the treatise may with confidence be relied on as containing an accurate statement of the principles which relate to the subject. 4 Kent, 80; 1 A.
