Mackeldy's Compendium is an exceedingly popular work, both in Germany and France, and has the reputation of being an elementary book of the highest order, and the best introduction to the study of the Roman Law. The translator of the American edition is a learned Ger- man jurist, who has added many useful notes and explanations, and in the capacity both of translator and editor he has acquitted himself in a highly commendable manner. 8 L.
