MOD signed W. J. Upon a Case being cited from II. Modern, before Lord Holt, tlie Chief Justice in ird said, " that no books ought to be cited at the Bar, but those which are licensed by the Judges." Such omissions were not regarded very complacently by the Bench, in former times. 1 Ld. Raym. 537; 11 L. M. 60. See Mkyns' Reports. MODERN REPORTS. Vol. III. A Collection of Special Cases, adjudged in the Court of K. B., in the Last Years of Ch. II., in the Reign of Jac. II., and in the 1st and 2d Years of Wm. &; Mary ; together with the Resolutions and Judgments thereupon, 5th ed. By T. Leach. 8vo. London. 1793. . Vol. IV. A Collection of several Special Cases argued and adjudged in the Courts of King and Queen's Bench, from the 2d to the Glh Year of William and Mary, and Judgments thereupon ; with several of the Pleadings at large ; being care- fully examined by the Records ; and, also, the number of the Rolls of most of the other Cases. 5lh ed. By T. Leach. 8vo. London. 1793. The reporter or editor states, in his Preface, " that nothing- might be wanting to tliis work, a much more than uffual care has been had in the correction of it; and the nice examination of the Rolls, however trou- blesome and expensive, has been performed perhaps beyond what has been done in most books of this nature." An inquiry arose in Slaler v. May, which led to an examination of the original record of a Case re- ported in IV. Modern, when it was discovered that an important fact had been omitted in the statement of the Case as printed. The Court, with warmth, remarked : "See the inconveniences of these scrambling Re- ports ; they will make us appear to posterity like a parcel of blockheads." 2 Ld. Raymond, 1073. . Vol. V. A Continuation of several Special Cases, argued and adjudged in the Court of K. B., from the Glh to the 1 llh Years of the Reign of Wm. III., and Judgments thereupon ; together with Special Pleadings to most of the Cases. 5th ed. By T. Leach. 8vo. London. 1794. Some interesting observations relative to the old reporters, will be found in the Preface to this volume, signed W. N. . Vol. VI. Cases argued and adjudged in the Court of Q.
