PAL PALEY, VM. A Treatise on the Law of Principal and Agent, chietly with reference to Mercantile Transactions. 8vo. London. 1812. 2d edition by Niel Gow. 1819. 3d edition, with addi- tions, by J. H. Lloyd. 8vo. London. 1833. 2d American edition, with additions by N. Gow, and a Digest of American Cases. 8vo. Exeter. 1822. See Law Library. The doctrines pertaining to Agency are clearly deduced from the au- thorities and accurately stated by the author, but this branch of the law has been very much developed since Paley wrote. Mr. Gow corrected some of the author's inaccuracies, made additions to the text, and con- tributed a good deal of matter in the shape of notes and references ; but a part of his contributions are irrelevant, and most of them merely mar- ginal notes of cases foisted into the work without much judgment or apparent elaboration. Mr. Lloyd very properly removed most of his predecessors' labors as excrescences. His object was to continue the subjects treated of by Paley, down to the time his edition was published, which he is allowed to have done with skill, fidelity and learning. Paley's treatise, as improved by Mr. Lloyd, continued to be the best upon the subject, till the publication of Mr. Justice Story's work upon Agency. 70 Month. Rev. 100; 9 L. M. 109; (23) 3; 22 A. J. 478. . The Law and Practice of Summary Convictions on Penal Statutes by Justices of the Peace ; including Proceedings preliminary and subsequent to Convictions, and on Appeal and Removal ; also, the Responsibility and Indemnity of Convicting Magistrates and their Officers ; with an Appendix of Practical Forms and Precedents of Convictions. 3d ed. By E. E. Dea- con, Esq. 8vo. London. 1838. "It is a work worthy of the early attention of the student; being upon a subject of equal importance and difficulty, and one which will soon require his exertions in practice." Warren's L. S. G19. PALFREY, J. G. A Sermon on the Decease of Chief Justice Parker. 8vo. Boston. 1830. PALGRAVE, FRANCIS. The Parliamentary Writs, and Writs of Military Summons, together with the Records and Muniments relating to the Suit and Service due and performed to the King's High Court of Parliament and the Councils of the Realm. 3 vols, fol. London. 1827-30. . Proceedings in Chancery in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth. 2 vols. fol. London. 1827-34. 551
