    The river that was parted, and became into four heads, is explained of Christ, the various acts of Whose life on earth are divided between the four Evangelists. Mediæval symbolism represents S. Matthew by Gihon, S. Mark by Tigris, S. Luke by Euphrates, and S. John by Pison.
