demanded by the leaders of his political party; and in the state Republican convention of 1892 he was nominated by acclamation for governor, and was elected by a handsome majority. Two years later he was reelected governor by a plurality more than four times greater than that received at his first election. He soon afterward, resigned the governorship, to take a seat in the United States senate, to which he was elected on January 23, 1895, for the term commencing March 4 of the same year. In 1901 he was reelected. His present term will expire March 4, 1907.
