was appointed Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy at Oxford in 1853, and is a member of the Heb- domadal Council, a Curator of the Bodleian Library, an honorary Fel- low of Queen's College, Oxford, a member of the Governing Body of Winchester College, and a visitor of Greenwich- Observatory. He is the author of a work on the Infinitesimal Calculus, including separate trea- tises on Differential Calculus, In- tegral Calculus, Statics, and Dyna- mics, published at the Clarendon Press in 1854-65.

PRICE, BoNAMY, M.A., born in Guernsey, May 22, 1807, was edu- cated under private tutors, and at Worcester College, Oxford, where he obtained a double first-class in classics and mathematics in Dec, 1829, and proceeded to the degree of M.A. He was appointed As- sistant-Master in Eugby School in Feb., 1830, and Professor of Political Economy in the University of Oxford in Feb., 1868. Professor Price is the author of ** The Anglo- Catholic Theory," reprinted from the Edinburgh Review of Oct., 1851 j " The Principles of Currency, Lec- tures delivered before the Univer- sity of Oxford," 1869 ;" Of Currency and Banking," 1876; "Practical Political Economy," 1878 ; an Ad- dress as President of the Economi- cal Department of the Social Science Congress at Cheltenham, 1878 ; and a second at Nottingham, 1882 j and many articles in reviews and maga- zines.

PEIESTLEY, William Ovbb- KND, M.D., born near Leeds, York- shire, June 24, 1829, is the son of Joseph Priestley, Esq., grand- nephew of the celebrated chemist Joseph Priestley, LL.D. He was educated at the University of Edin- burgh, and took the degree of M.D. in 1853. Besides other academic distinctions, he was Senate Gold Medallist at his graduation, this being the highest honour of the University, and awarded only for original researches. Settling in

London as a physician in 1856, he became one of the lecturers at the Grosvenor Place School of Medicine. Somewhat later he was appointed Lecturer on Midwifery at the Mid- dlesex Hospital, and in 1862 Pro- fessor of Obstetric Medicine in King's College, London, and Physi- cian to King's College Hospital. He is now Consulting Physician to King's College Hospital. Dr. Priest- ley is a member of the Koyal College of Surgeons of England ; a Fellow of the Eoyal College of Phy- sicians both in London and Edin- burgh, a Fellow of King's College, a member of the Council of King's College, and member of various learned societies. He has held the office of Examiner for the prescribed term of years both in the Univer- sity of London, the Eoyal College of Physicians, and the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1875 and 1876 he was President of the Obstetrical Society of London. Dr. Priestley is the author of a work "On the Development of the Gravid Uterus," and joint editor of Sir J. Y. Simpson's "Obstetric Works;" and has written various papers on natural history and medicine. He was one of the Physicians- Accou- cheur to H.R.H. the late Prinoees Louis of Hesse (AUce of Great Britain) having been oommissioned by the Queen to attend her daugh- ter at Darmstadt. PEINSEP, Valentine C, A.E.A., painter, was born in India, Feb. 14, 1838, and educated at Haileybujy College. He was ori- ginally intended for the Indian Civil Service, but he preferred the profession of artist. His pointings, which occupy a prominent place in the annual Exhibition of the Boyal Academy, are of a high order, and remarkable for a poVer and vigour of design, and beauty of colouring very rare in modern days.
