The rest of Part I. is taken up with an account of the various pathological phenomena which occasionally arise in the function of speech ; whereby the opinion expressed in some of Steinthal's earliest works, as to the threefold nature of the factors operative in the act of speech, receives confirmation. It has been found that the function of speaking is controlled by three centres, namely, the general centre of intelligence, the motor or sound-centre, which directs the bodily mechanism of articulation, and the centre for the psychical side of language.
