by the jeers and laughter of the whole town.

"At all the desert towns they solemnly assured us that it would be impossible to break through to Los Angeles, except by way of San Diego. Hanshue insisted that he was going to try the trip with the boat. To his great disgust the road was excellent, as desert roads go, all the way through.

"At Brawley we found Harvey Herrick–twice winner of the Phoenix race and now connected with the Apperson. He drove us back to Los Angeles. It was a wonderful experience to see him snake a car at full speed over a desert road. Herrick is said to be the finest rough road driver in the world. Just ahead of us a big car, driven by a couple of tender-feet from Illinois, had made the trip. Unused to desert driving, the track of their big tires looked like a cork screw.

"At high speed, Herrick followed the trail, following in the tracks of the other car.

"The road goes to the west of the Salton Sea. We made a wide detour around Mecca and Indio, arriving at Coachella as it was growing dark.

"They decided to continue on through Palm Springs, where is a peach of a little hotel. It was a weird, queer, desolate experience, sneaking along in the dark, in among desert buttes, past little desert farms and across washes that sometimes showed no roads at all.

"At Palm Springs we found Wheeler, the Indianapolis carburetor king, and a lot of other people and left with them the next morning for home.

"Hanshue and Herrick say the road through the White Water Wash used to be a fright. Autos sometimes got stalled to the point where nothing but a two or three mile walk for a plank would pry them out. It is now in good condition, and we had no trouble in going through on the high.

"We had lunch at Riverside. In time, this trip that we made will become one of the standard auto tours of California. It has everything–the trip along the beautiful San Diego coast, old San Juan Capistrano Mission, the wild scenery of the Mountain Springs grade, the quaint old fashioned mountain towns of California of fifty years ago; the new desert of opportunity where young men are building fortunes in Imperial Valley, the strange Salton Sea country, Palm Springs and the citrus country among the luxurious ranches of Redlands and Riverside, not to mention Smiley Heights and Magnolia Drive. When it comes to “seeing America first” you can certainly get an eyeful on this route.

"We went rushing through. At least two weeks should be devoted to the trip.”

——The many motorists who use the Alviso road will be glad to learn that Supervisor Henry M. Ayer intends to pave that highway from the city limits to Alviso. When this new road is completed a better entrance will be had to the South Bay Yacht Club and other points. The surface is to be composed of asphalt and macadam.
