intercourse between India and the countries on the northern side of the Himalaya than in the time of your Lordship's administration. The contents of the present volume will, I trust, prove to be useful contributions towards that knowledge which wiU be the means of some day re-estabhshing friendly intercourse between India and Tibet; and in the hope that my efforts towards that end will receive your approval,
I remain,
Dear Lord Northbrook,
Yours with much regard and respect,
CLEMENTS E. MARKHAM.
