A small robust shrub, 6 to 8 ft. high. Leaves extremely thick, hard, and leathery; upper surface glossy, smooth, and of a bright green, with white trellis-like markings; densely covered beneath with brown tomentum or hairs, hence its name; head without a ray; flowers all tubular. Hook. fil. It grows in the Northern and Middle Islands. The specimen represented came from Mount Egmont, on the Ranges 4,000 ft. high. Flowers in January.
