Benedict XV was elected Pontiff on Sept. 3, 1914 and was crowned on the 6th of the same month. He became the two hundred and sixtieth in a line of monarchs-absolute and elective-who aisde from being the heads of the Roman Catholic Church, had enjoyed temporal dominion until deprived thereof by the Italian law of guarantees of May 13, 1871, which confined their temporal jurisdiction to the Vatican palaces, to the palaces of San Giovanni in Laterano and to the villa of Castel Gandolfo as tenants.
