SURNAMES FROM SINGLE LETTERS. SOME of our surnames seem undoubtedly to have been derived from single letters of the alphabet. I have tried to make a list of them. All the names mentioned occur in either the ' London Directory ' or the ' Liver- pool Directory," with the exception of Gee- son, which is, however, the patronymic of a well-known Midland cricketer. An examina- tion of other directories would probably result in further examples being found.
