Are all,—except the flowing tears
That from these eyes contrasted fall,
Where transient pleasure oft appears,
And tender grief, when pains appal.

But may the sovereign God on high
Expand our infant minds, and give
His Holy Spirit from the sky,
To guide us in his fear to live.

And may our parents early teach
Our little tongues to lisp his praise;
And may our infant hearts beseech
His pitying love and pardoning grace.

And may these mental powers receive
The Spirit that our Saviour gave;
Be in his righteousness arrayed,
And live with him beyond the grave.

And if the paths of life we trace,
And more mature our spirits grow,
May we still keep his holy ways,
And bless him in his courts below.
