In "A Catalogue of Engraved British Heads " is the statement: "On the revival of the Society of Antiquaries in 1717, the Earl [of Winchilsea] was chosen presi- dent, when he procured the excellent artist, Vertue, the office of engraver to that respectable body. His lordship was well ac- quainted with his skill, which he had eminently shown in engraving his lordship's portrait, before mentioned. �P. xlix, 1. 11 : "Books which I have subscribed for" �(a) " Carm. Quad" This is doubtless the Carmina Quadragesi- malia referred to by Coleridge in a note on his poem Kisses. A copy in the Bristol Library is catalogued as in " 2 vols. Oxon. 1723- 48, 4to." �(6) " Recuille des Piers" etc., is probably the book by Stosch, entitled, Pierres antiques gravies .... Dessinees et gravies .... par B. Picart, Tirees des principaux cabinets de I 'Europe, 1724. �(c)" Monfaucons Supplim." Bernard de Monfaucon published V Antiquity expliquee et represent^ en figures in 1719. A Sup- pliment au livre de I'Antiquitt, etc., appeared in Paris, 1725, 5 vols. �(d) "Cardinal Wolsey's Life." Doubtless the Life by Fiddes, published by subscription in 1724. �(e) " Querels Testament. " Probably Quesnel's Reflexions morales sur le Nouveau Testament" published 1694; condemned by Pope Clement XI., 1713. �(f) "Sr.Ra. Winnwood's Letters." In 1725 Edmund Sawyer published in London (3 vols.) Memorials of Affairs of State .... collected chiefly from the original papers of the Hon. Sir Ralph Winnwood, etc. �(g) " Rev. Lewis 1 Isle of Thanet." One of Lewis's topograph- ical works, published 1723. �(h) Mr. Breval's Book." John Durant Breval wrote The Con- federates, and so would doubtless be well known to Lord and Lady Winchilsea. The book mentioned here is probably Breval's Remarks on Several Parts of Europe, 1723, 4 vols. �(i) "Dr. Barwick's Life." Probably the Vita J.
