Bacon and canned tomatoes— the latter because of the liquid— are the two table necessities of those who live in a country so dry that to waste a pint of water is to court the undertaker. Great difficulty has been experienced in the Mexican campaign because of the high winds which lash the sand and dust violently against man and beast. It is impossible to move in any one direction in a sand-storm. To prepare food under such conditions requires all the patience and fortitude that soldiers are credited with having
