Chapter XXI.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT.

[Mat. 5 to 7, 29.]

Fig. 72. Mount of the Beatitudes. (Phot. Bonfils.)

ON one occasion, when Jesus saw a very great multitude[1] gathered together to hear Him, He went up into a mountain and sat down; and His disciples were with Him. The people placed themselves around, and along the sides of the mountain (Fig. 72), waiting in respectful silence till He commenced to speak. Then He taught them:

  1. Multitude. The people had gathered together, not only from Judaea and Galilee, but from the countries to the north and east of Galilee, and even from the heathen countries of Tyre and Sidon. They had gathered together and were waiting for Jesus in the plain at the foot of the mountain, where He had spent the night in prayer. In order to be better able to speak to this crowd, He stood on a projection on the slope of the mountain. His apostles and disciples were gathered around and below Him, while on the plain stood or sat the vast multitude.
