Chapter LXIX.

THE AGONY OF JESUS IN THE GARDEN.

WHEN Jesus had said these things, He went forth with His disciples over the brook Cedron [1] to a place called Gethsemani, on the Mount of Olives, where there was a garden [2], into which He entered (Fig. 85). Then He said to His disciples: “Sit you here[3] while I go yonder and pray.” And taking with Him

  1. Cedron. The ravine to the east of Jerusalem, through which this brook runs, separates the city from the Mount of Olives. Jesus crossed the brook by a bridge to reach the Mount of Olives. David crossing the brook and going up the Mount, weeping (Old Test. LVI), was a type of what our Lord did on this night of His agony.
  2. A garden. This formed part of an estate or farm, called Gethsemani.
  3. Sit you here. At the entrance of the garden. The eight apostles were not allowed to see our Blessed Lord in the hour of His abasement, lest they should be scandalized.
