The collapse of their own strength turned them into apologists of the so-called "virtues" of humility, long-suffering, forgiveness, — until, according to the Judaeo-Christian code of ethics, being good came to mean being weak. So races may justly be classified into masters and slaves, and history proves that to the strong goes the empire. The ambitions of a nation are a sure criterion of its worth.
