TOUR,
THROUGH
NORTH and SOUTH WALES,
IN THE YEAR 1797.
The first town on the road from London to Shrewsbury, (which is generally the entrance to North-Wales,) worthy of remark, is the ancient one of St. Alban in the county of Herts, 21 miles from London. This place derives its name from Alban, the first English Martyr, who suffered in the perfecution under Dioclesian. He was buried on a hill, in the neighbourhood of this town; where a monastery was erected, and dedicated to him, by King Offa.––––Old Verulam stood on the other side the river, in the moor, S. W.
