Introductory Remarks on Series A and B.
As 's well known from the preliminary report by Pun SCHEI on the geological observations made during the Second Norwegian Polar Expedition ol the “From” (Appendix to Own SVERDRL‘P: "New Land"), published in 1903, the sections of palmozoic rocks yielding the greatest stratigraphical and palmontological results, were found in the south- western corner of Ellesmere Land, between Harbour Fjord (Norm: Havne- fjord) in .Iones' Sound and Baumann Fjord (which lies hetweeu Bjorne- kapland and Raanes Peninsula, up. the map, p, 3).
\Vithin this region the more detailed observations were made in the environs ol Goose Fjord (Norw.: Goasetjord] where the "From" had her winter quarters during the two seasons 19007190] and 100l#1902. The stratigraphical systems of the Goose Fjord were divided by Scum into the series A, B, C, D and E of which the last two were regarded as Devonian The preliminary identifications oi fossils and their strati- graphiual bearing were made by Dri JoliAN KIA-ill. now prolessor of palm- ontology of the University at Christiania.
Since the publication of SCI-151's report, several papers by specialists on dilferent collections from these series have appeared. In 1904 Professor NATIIORST of Stockholm published “Die oberdevonische Flora des Ellesmere»Landes"‘, describng the fossil plants from Series E In 1900 "Neues Jahrhuch It'n' Mineralogie etc.". Beilagehandi 31, con- tained an article by OSCAR Enron Moron: “Die Entwicklung der ark- tischen Meere in palfiozoischer Zeit”, in which he gives, inter alia, a short summary of his studies on the fossils collected by Scum tron] Series D and sent to Professor FRECII in Breslau tor detailed exmninntion. In the spring of this yearY 19t3, the final result of Dr. Morms pnlwontologiml investigations was printed as No. 29 ot the said report under the title:
