FRAM rnforlimately Sam was not able to study tin' beds next younger than hi- Series K. 50 we do not know what is lying between these high Devonian beds and the Upper C a r h o n i f e r o u s limestones studied ,-it Store Bjornrkiip (Bear Ope). Prohahly the lower ( ; honiferous here, MS in other districts of the Arctic Archipelago, is developed as a continental deposition of plant-hearing sandstones and shale- The hulk of the carboniferous fossils collected hy S<;im were found at Store Bjornekap, a locality about "/") km. north of the inner end of Gaasefjord. The rock at Bjornekap is. according to Sam. in the lower part on unfossiliferous, brownish grey, hard limestone, higher up a white limestone, rich in chert, and in this upper hori/.on the fossils were found. Carboniferous limestone was also found far to the north in Axel 1 1,-il.rix'- Land, in Svarte Vaeg (Black Wall), but from this locality only a few fossils, embedded in dark gray, not cherty limestone were brought. The carboniferous fossils were, after the return of the expedition sent to Prof. TSCHEKNY.SCHEW, who did not, however, live to see the result of his studies on the fossils printed. In fact the work, in which he was assisted by P. STI:I' .ow. who had taken the study of the corals and bryo/i.a. was not quite finished at the death of TSCHKHNYSCHKW about New Year 1!MI. The closing chapter of the manuscript was still un- written. Besides Dr. STEPANOW also Dr. P. v. WITTENBURG of Petrograd, has done a very considerable and important work in looking through T-< in RNTSCHEw's manuscript and preparing it for publication.
