§ 2. Classification of Letters

Of the 30 Servian letters there are: 5 vowels (а, е, и, о, and у) and 25 consonants (б, в, г, д, ђ, ж, з, ј, к, л, љ, м, н, њ, п, р, с, т, ћ, ф, х, ц, ч, џ, ш).

With regard to the organs that give utterance to the various consonants, the following classification is obtained:

Labials: б, п, в, ф, м.
Gutturals: т, к, х.
Dentals: д, т, з, с, ц.
Hissings: ђ, ж, ј, љ, њ, ћ, ч, џ, ш
Palatals: л, н, р

§ 3. Pronunciation of Vowels.

A, a.

Its proper sound is that of a in father, and can be short (`or ̏) or long (´ or ̂), eg.:

баба [babah] grandmother'
