CHAPTER I.

The Emperor Aurengzib, after having spent great part of his life in bringing under subjection the region of the Deckan, without being able fully to accomplish that end, marched towards Dehli, then the capital of the empire of the house of Baber. He was, however, overtaken by fate at the city of Ahmednagar, where, in the ninety-first year of his age, and the fifty-second of his reign, his venerable person, assaulted by a variety of diseases, was reduced so low that he despaired of his life. There were then in his camp two of the princes, his sons, Cambakhsh, the youngest and most beloved, and Mahomed Aazem-shah, who bore the character of a man of ability, and of being fond of military glory.
