affections upon other lords beside Jehovah, and thus had profaned holy things. It was for this, the Lord called them a wicked and adulterous generation, seeking after signs. The mere worlding who, by a love of evil, adulterates and profanes holy things, seeks to hide the deformity of this state by shrouding himself in a ceremonial religion. Such persons are more ready to condemn than to give—to kill, than to save alive! But do thou, O reader! follow the Lord Jesus: for He never condemns: He teaches forgiveness and universal love. It is sin and not the Lord, that condemns. Mercy thus speaks to each one—"Go, and sin no more!"

JACOB'S DREAM.
"And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it."—Gen. xxviii. 12.
AFTER Jacob had received the blessing of his father Isaac, who charged him not to take a wife of the daughters of Canaan, but to arise and go to Padan-aram, and to take a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban, he departed to execute the will of his father. In the course of his journey from Beersheba, towards Haran, "he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep." (ver. II.) It was here, in this place, with the starry heavens for his canopy and stones for his pillows, that Jacob slept in safety and in peace; and, as if to
