Word of God? which are called a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb. (Rev. xxii. 1.) They proceed from the Divine Love, or from the house eastward, and appear in all the brilliancy of perfect light at the south side of the altar. The east is an emblem of Divine Love, where the Lord, the Sun of Righteousness, is ever rising upon all the families of mankind, and the south is where light is in its fulness. Now to measure any thing is, in Scripture language, to ascertain its quality. The truths of Revelation to the natural man, appear to be not at all deep, but merely of a literal or worldly cast; and hence, this first sight being shallow, is as the first measuring, only to the ankles; but as the mind becomes more enlarged and love prompts to deeper thought, these truths, which at first appeared shallow, are found to contain wisdom of a spiritual kind, connecting man with heaven and eternity! At this second measuring, the waters are seen to rise to the knees, higher up in the body towards the seat of life, where intelligence leading to wisdom, is seen. This also keeps increasing as man advances in the regenerate life, and the waters rise to the loins; for then there is conjunction with the Lord by the perfect union of all that is good in will, and true in thought. But even this is not all; for the waters, by the fourth measuring, become an impassable river—to instruct us that the waters of Divine Truth conduct to a celestial intelligence and wisdom, which exceed even angelic thought, because possessing an infinity altogether beyond the power of created beings fully to grasp.
