forth its Creator, is also triunely formed. The word trinity means, not three distinct personal identities, but the trinal form of a unit; thus, a triangle is one form, but, having three corners or angles, it is a trinal form. Again, as the three primal rays are one beam of light, so the three essentials are one God, neither without the other, is. Love does all things by wisdom, and nothing without it: this explains our Lord's words, "What things soever the Father doeth, these also doeth the Son." (John v. 19.) O Lord God our Saviour! in whom is the Holy Trinity, we beseech thee to grant us for ever thy peace.


February Twenty-sixth.

THE TREACHEROUS KISS.

"Betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss?"Luke xxii. 48.

SOLOMON has said, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful." (Prov. xxvii. 6.) Nothing can be truer than this proverb, for the wounds given by a friend may be compared to the good offices of a surgeon, who, by inflicting upon his patient a momentary pang, intends nothing but his ulterior and certain good; while the kisses of an enemy, by a crafty display of pretended affection, seek to give a moment's joy to the object to whom he intends nothing but treachery and ruin. It is remarkable, that among the twelve apostles, two should be found, the one to deny his Divine Master, and the other to betray him. Jesus was neither denied nor betrayed by the mocking or unthinking world—by those who received not his teaching; but by those
