from the mere lip-worship of faith alone; for such is the offering of Cain, dead and worthless; and to which, because it brings down no blessings to those who offer it, Thou hast no respect. Gracious Saviour! help us so to follow Thee in the way, that we may finally possess the life that is everlasting.

Thursday Evening.

WE approach Thee, O God of Truth! with thankful and grateful hearts for thy protecting care and providence through this day. It is indeed, gracious Father! a sweet privilege to open unto Thee our hearts and to give thanks. Most truly can we acknowledge that goodness and mercy have followed us all our days: our bread has been given, and our water sure. Thy continual providence and tender care over us must for ever be the joy in our hearts, and the praise on our tongues. In every state of mind we behold the finger of Thee, our God, working for our good, some miracle in our souls. Every such state that Thou hast been pleased to enlighten with wisdom and intelligence, has been to us a day of joy and gladness, swelling our hearts with gratitude, and giving utterance to speech of thankfulness and love. Even in our states of obscurity we have gained some knowledge of Thee and of thy mercy; so that "day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge." O may thy constant care and blessing rest upon all the inhabitants of this house, and may we ever be impressed with the truth that
