THE DEEP WELL.
"Thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep."—John iv. 11.
JESUS, in journeying from Judea, came, it is said, to a city called Sychar, where was Jacob's well; and, being wearied with his journey, sat upon the well to rest. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me to drink." The woman replied, "How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans." To this. Jesus said, "If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee. Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of Him, and he would have given thee living water." The phrase living water must have impressed the woman with serious thoughts. What can living water be? How can this stranger give me living water? She therefore replied, "Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?" It is an instructive truth, that all the incidents and narratives of the Gospel are replete with spiritual interest, because in their evangelical import they relate to the church and to religious faith and life, and to
