the love of good; and scarlet is that mutual love and charity which pervades the minds of the people of God. All these, if we would be blessed in our prayers and thanksgivings, should be present in our devotions. The scarlet here, though not mentioned in our translation, gives the idea of double-dyed scarlet, expressive of mutual love. It is called mutual, because celestial love imparted from the one to the other is not only returned back to the original giver, but also the receiver's love is given in return. Thus love mutual is the bright scarlet double-dyed. How necessary to human happiness is the mutual love of the brethren! for upon these hang all the law and the prophets.

WE cannot contemplate the marvellous construction of the human body, the extreme beauty of its form, and the adjustment of all its parts, which thereby insures to man the greatest possible amount of ease and happiness, without feeling a rising gratitude of soul to swell the bosom, urging the tongue to its duty of praise and thanksgiving to that Parent of good, who, in creating man in his own image and likeness, has thus crowned him with glory and honour! The slightest reflection upon the capabilities with which God in his wisdom has endowed us, by the faithful exercise of which a pleasant and peaceful life may be acquired while here, preparatory to the life that is everlasting, is sufficient to draw forth a
