THE GUEST-CHAMBER.
"Where is the guest-chamber?"—Matt. xiv. 14.
WHERE is the guest-chamber? is an inquiry of the utmost importance; since it is there where the Lord assembles with his humble followers to eat the Passover, and to impart to them bread and wine—the outward emblems of His Divine Good and Truth, which he calls his flesh and blood, given for the life of the world.
The Passover is a feast of the Jews, established in commemoration of their liberation from Egypt. (Exod. xii.) The night before their departure, the destroying angel, who slew the first-born of the Egyptians, passed over the houses of the Hebrews without entering therein, because they were marked with the blood of the lamb, which, for this reason, was called the Paschal Lamb. With this blood they sprinkled the door-posts and lintel of every house, that the destroying angel, at the sight of the blood, might pass over them; and to commemorate this deliverance, the Passover was established. By this liberation from Egyptian bondage, the Israelites were enabled to progress onward to their promised land.
Blessed is the man whose eyes are opened to behold the spiritual teachings of the Word of God.
To commemorate this happy deliverance from the thraldom of evil and error, we are commanded to meet the Lord, and to partake with him of that feast he is sure to bless. But where is the hallowed meeting to be held? In the guest-chamber! there we are to
