good has its dwelling-place in light, where under a cheering influence it lives and flourishes for ever. Thus the true followers of the Lord are called children of the light, who walk in and possess the light of life! Hence "light is sown for the righteous." (Psalm xcvii. 11.)
In self-love, shrouded in darkness, there is an inward uncleanness; this is the worm! fly from it, reader! Remember there will always be found a worm in JONAH'S GOURD.
April Fifth.
"Why do thy disciples transgress the traditions of the elders?"—Matt. xv. 2.
TRADITIONS are certain sentiments, customs, or sayings, not written in the Word of God, but delivered, or said to be handed down, from one to another by succession, and passing thus from one generation to another. The Jews originally did not commit their traditions to writing, till Rabin Judah composed the Mishna, a collection of Jewish traditions. To this were added the Genera of Jerusalem and Babylon, which, in the whole, make up the Talmud of Jerusalem, a work of eighteen folio volumes. The Jews call their traditions the Oral Law, pretending that God delivered them to Moses, by word of mouth, on Mount Sinai; that the law-giver taught and committed them to the elders, which they were to convey down to their successors, and so on. Through this channel the Jews pretend to have received all their traditions; and such is their extravagant veneration
