Whatever, then, O man! may be thy troubles, crosses, or perplexities here, know that God designs, by his providence, to deprive thee of all earth-born cares by showing thee the changing nature of all sublunary things, that thou mayest the more readily fix thy affections on things above, where everything is real and enduring. Divine providence is not only over universals, or things generally, but is in and over all the singulars and particulars of a man's life, from the moment of his birth to that of his death, and afterwards for ever! When our minds are duly impressed with this great truth, we shall cheerfully bear the troubles of the moment, knowing that nothing short of everlasting peace, the peace which the world cannot give, is designed by the Prince of Peace in the permission of troubles.
Do not, then. O Christian! let thy soul be cast down under the cloud that for a moment dims thy sight and obscures thy hopes of brighter scenes! Remember, "The very hairs of your head are all numbered." (Matt. x. 30.) This teaches us that the most trifling things of our life are under the control of Him whose wisdom sees for us, and whose love provides; so that whatever the states through which we may be called to pass, whether pleasing or distressing to the natural mind, we may be assured that, if we are willing and obedient to the leadings of Providence, we shall eat of the good of the land!—our bread shall be given and our water shall be sure; for it is a truth that "The Lord will provide." Who will not rejoice in this journey of life, even in states of darkness and doubt, when he reflects on this great truth, that God provides all good for his chiidren, and
