and love constantly dwell, as the very spirit and life of the Lord's words. The doctrines of truth contained in the Word, all of which are designed to enlighten the mind of night-wandering men, to instruct, and to bless, are emphatically called the paths of Jehovah. These paths, in the beautiful language of truth, do indeed "drop fatness;" as they are called "mercy and truth." (Psalm xxv. 10.) To have even but a slight knowledge of the manner by which the Lord accommodates the highest truths of heaven to the wants and capabilities of men on earth, so that the angelic wisdom may be thus clothed in human language, is indeed a privilege which must ever call forth the lasting gratitude of the humble heart. In Divine Revelation we discover the universal language of heaven; in which all the objects in the world of nature are named as so many types and corresponding emblems of those mental states of affection and thought which exist in heaven and in the soul of man. Thus, by the expressive language of correspondence, the written Word of God keeps up an eternal connection between God and his creation, effecting a lasting and unbroken union between God and man, heaven and earth, the soul and the body, the world of spirit and the world of matter. In all the incidents of the Exodus of the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, their journey through and encampments in the wilderness, and their final possession of Canaan, are embodied spiritual descriptions of our own liberation from that spiritual bondage, which by mere scientific or worldly knowledge, is denoted by Egypt. And thus through conflicts, warfare, and temptations, to the land of promise—a state of wisdom, peace, and prosperity,
