life, when love and truth take a full possession of the soul: then it is that the high mountain is ascended—that exalted state of love celestial in which the Lord can be seen in his Divine brightness as the All-in-all of his creation. How grand was the scene! To shew that nothing but pure love beams for ever from the Divine countenance, the face of Jesus shone as the sun. He, as the Sun of Righteousness, is ever seen rising upon all the families of his creation with everlasting health and life. The raiment of Jesus was white as the light, shewing that the purest truths ever bright and fair invest the Divine Majesty. Thou, O Lord, "coverest thyself with light as with a garment." (Psalm civ. 2.). Moses and Elias were seen, talking with Jesus, because, as Moses represents the historical word of Revelation, and Elias the prophetic, so to talk with Jesus, who is the truth—the Word made flesh—teaches that all revelation, both historical and prophetic, gives a faithful testimony of Him who is the light and life of men. O how true are these words, "The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." (Rev. xix. 10.) The inmost sense, or spirit of the Word, is nothing but the testimony of Jesus; a testimony of his love, wisdom, creation, and providence. What a holy prostration of soul was produced in the mind of these three favoured apostles! a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice was heard to say, in reference to the Lord—"This is my beloved Son, hear Him." They fell on their face in a holy state of reverence and fear: but the touch of Jesus gives spiritual power to the humble, causes an elevation of affection and thought, in which there is confidence and peace: "Arise, and be not afraid," is the
