O Christian, ponder well in thy mind the difference between these two, and know that repentance involves the twofold work of a change from error to truth, from ignorance to wisdom, and from evil of will and motive to that of inward holiness of life and practice. It is good to repent of our errors, and exchange them for the everlasting truths of the gospel; but it is very good to carry that change out to the purification of our life and practice. To know the truth, and yet to live in the love of evil, is but stopping half-way in the work of repentance, and giving to Jesus the treacherous kiss of Judas, by which the Lord is betrayed and the truth delivered up to the mockery and scorn of a wicked unthinking world. To search out our errors, sins, and evils, to know them, hate them, and put them, away as sins against God, is true repentance. It is a repentance needing not to be repented of. It isva sure way to plant heaven in the soul, to erect the kingdom of God there, and to possess the precious boon of Life Everlasting.
THERE is no subject which the mind of man can contemplate with such deep reverence as that of the Divine compassion. In the Hebrew language, compassion is expressed by a term signifying the inmost and tenderest love, involving in it, every variety of affection, desire, and mercy, that burns to impart to others all that is joyous and happy.
