GERMANY.
Claimed by Germany, as having formed part of its old possessions, are the French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine. In consequence of the declaration of war by France, July 1870, the two provinces were occupied by German troops, and, pending a formal treaty to that effect, provisionally annexed to the Empire. The following table gives the area, and population, at the census of 1866, of the annexed provinces, as divided into two German ' Regierungs Bezirke' or government districts : —
