Three of the vessels in the above list form part of a new class called Her Majesty's Navy for the Defence of the Colonies. The turret ships Abyssinia and Magdala were built for the defence of Bombay, and the turret-ship Cerberus, paid for by the Colony of Victoria, for the defence of Melbourne.
The cost of the principal ships of the ironclad fleet of war, together with particulars as to construction, is given in the subjoined table, drawn up on the basis of returns made by the admiralty, and statements by Mr. E. J. Reed, chief constructor of the navy till 1870. The cost given represents actual outlay on labour and materials, but does not include establishment charges at the royal dockyards, calculated to amount to an additional 12^ per cent. Sums marked in parentheses are only estimates, the actual cost not having been ascertained.
